Software Craftsmanship and Dynamic Dependency Injection with Application Filters

April 20th 6pm-8:30pm

Spring is finally here folks! Its time to picnic at Great Falls, frolic in the sunshine, and, of course, attend an MCJUG.April brings us Fadi Stephan presenting on Software Craftsmanship and Kurt Luedke talking about Dynamic Dependency Injection with Application Filters.

Speaker bio:

Fadi Stephan is a technology consultant with Washington DC-based Excella Consulting. He has more than twelve years of professional experience as a product manager, project manager, software developer, and consultant at businesses ranging from start-ups to Fortune 500 companies. Since 2006, Fadi's focus has been on agile adoption and on transitioning, coaching, and mentoring teams in agile practices using Scrum. Fadi is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP) and a certified Scrum Professional (CSP).

Presentation outline:

Software craftsmen believe that the state of software development is going downhill so they established the software craftsmanship movement to reverse this downhill trend. But what is this movement all about? And how is it supposed to improve the quality of software? In this presentation, I introduce software craftsmanship, review its history and explore the driving factors that led to its creation. I cover the craftsman’s ethics, disciplines, principles and best practices. I also discuss the latest ongoing arguments between advocates and opponents of the movement. I wrap up by providing an overview of the tools and forums available to developers for practicing their craft.

Speaker bio:

Kurt Luedke is an applications architect and developer with over 25 years of experience in IT, primarily in financial systems and application security.  He has worked in Fortune 100 companies as well as extremely small micro-companies.  He enjoys mentoring companies and developers in dynamic, flexible architectures, such as language oriented programming and dynamic dependency injection.  His current areas of focus are dynamic architectures, application instrumentation and application security.

Presentation outline:

Application filters are a powerful tool modeled after servlet filters.  They allow for dynamic dependency injection into the major components of an application or into the depths of an application’s inner workings.  Composed from well known design patterns, application filters allow you to inspect, monitor and/or alter an application’s logic while it is processing.  The presentation will use a mock web book store application to illustrate the ability to modify the application’s behavior on the fly.
